When American Express added a monthly credit for a Walmart+ subscription to the Platinum Card® from American Express, I didn’t understand what they were going for. It felt like an odd pairing—Walmart, long considered a discount mega-retailer, showing up in a benefit package better known for Centurion Lounge access and luxury hotel perks.
At the time, I dismissed it as just another entry in the AMEX Platinum’s ever-growing Coupon Book of Benefits.
Then Came the Streaming Angle
What eventually changed my mind was a lesser-known detail: Walmart+ includes a Paramount+ subscription. That perk alone saved me around $100 a year, and suddenly this odd little benefit was pulling its weight.
I wasn’t the only one to catch on. As Platinum cardholders began to explore Walmart+, something else was happening behind the scenes.
Walmart Is Stepping Up Its Game
While all of this was happening, AMEX was gently nudging upscale cardmembers toward Walmart; the retailer was evolving. Walmart has been updating its product mix—bringing in more premium brands, higher-quality goods, and even launching private labels aimed squarely at shoppers who aren’t just looking for the cheapest price. It’s part of a deliberate effort to win over higher-income customers—and it appears to be working.
Want to know how well? This is what my wife posted on her FB timeline yesterday:
She had downloaded the Spirit app because we’re flying on them again – her second time (LOL, here’s what she thought about her first flight with them) – this weekend.
Now there’s yet another sign that this partnership is more than just a fluke.
A New Offer, But Only for Platinum
According to a report from Doctor of Credit, some AMEX users began seeing a new targeted AMEX Offer on their accounts: spend $60 at Walmart.com and get $20 back, up to two times.
At first, it seemed like a general offer. However, readers quickly noticed something unusual: the deal wasn’t appearing for all cardholders. In fact, it looked like only the personal AMEX Platinum Card was targeted. Not Gold, not Green—just Platinum.
Is the AMEX Platinum the New Walmart Credit Card?
Put it all together: a free Walmart+ membership, a bundled Paramount+ subscription, free same-day grocery delivery, and now targeted AMEX Offers worth up to $40—exclusively for Platinum cardholders.
If you’re a regular Walmart shopper, or even just looking for ways to get more value from your Platinum Card, this unlikely pairing might be a perfect match.
Because at this point, let’s be honest: the AMEX Platinum is starting to resemble the new Walmart credit card.
