It was a decade in the making, and it wasn’t without its share of drama, but Berlin Brandenburg Airport FINALLY opened (albeit without this) on October 31, 2020 (oh, and here’s why it took so long). If nothing else, it was a bit of “happy travel news” in the midst of a long year of the travel industry reeling through the COVID pandemic.
Meanwhile, with Brandenburg up and running, it left Berlin Tegel Airport, which closed right around the time that Brandenburg opened, sitting in the dust. So what’s a country to do with an abandoned airport they don’t need anymore?
Sell it.
So right now, a whole bunch of items from Tegel Airport are up for auction.
They’re not using eBay, so don’t look there. Instead, they’re all listed online, presented by Dechow on Troostwijk Auctions, an international auction house that specializes in industrial assets.
They have the airport’s items listed in three categories:
Flat-screen monitors and multi-seat benches (because sure, I always think of big monitors and airport seats at the same time???)
What I like to call “Miscellaneous crap” (think table saw, coffee roasting machine, photos, dishwasher, luggage belts, high-speed doors, etc.)
Starting bids are, I would say, fair.
- 6-seater bench (description: grey, tubular steel frame, perforated sheet support, 3,200 mm wide) is starting at €35 ($42.45)
- LG brand wall mounted 55″ flat screen monitor’s starting bid was €55 ($66.70)
- Snow plows’ starting bids varied from €2,800 ($3395.80) to €11,200 ($13583.19)
However, each auction specifically says, “We point out that in this auction no inspection is possible. The buyer waives any warranty and liability claims against the seller with the submission of his bid.” So if you win, you have to keep your fingers crossed that it works 😉 (seriously though, they do say you can make an appointment to view the item or items you’re interested in).
The auctions end on February 12 (snowplows), February 11 (seats and screens) and February 9 (miscellaneous crap).
With a pandemic still raging on, travel to and within Germany is, well, let’s call it “difficult.” So pick up (which must be done by early March) would not be easy and transport to the U.S. would probably negate any savings. But if you really, REALLY want some benches, a flat-screen monitor and a coffee grinder from the now-defunct Tegel Airport, welp, now you know how to get them. 😉
