Happy Sunday (and Happy Valentine’s Day) to all our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, so we’re passing them along.
- There are not many more romantic places on the planet than Hawaii. So much that Sharon and I traveled there for our Honeymoon and stayed at the Marriott Resort at Wailea on Maui. Marriott is expanding its footprint at Wailea and adding an AC Hotel adjacent to its centerpiece property. While it’s a nice enough hotel brand, we’ve stayed at an AC Hotel in New York and I’m not sure the vibe fits in with the surrounding island lifestyle.
- What else is there to be said about the newly opened Berlin Brandenberg Airport? It took over a decade for it to open, and here’s why. Then pilots were hating it before they even had to fly there. Now, in its first winter of operation, they’re finding out about an unrelenting freezing draft blowing into the terminal from the adjacent rail station. My question is how did no one notice this over the past 10 years?????
- Getting back to the romantic stories, I found a post on Miles to Memories about how a married couple never sits together on flights on purpose. Admittedly, Sharon and I will always book a window and aisle seat on a 3-3 domestic plane hoping that the flight won’t be totally booked and we’ll have the row to ourselves. However, if someone comes to claim the middle seat, we’ll offer them the window or aisle (depending on whose turn it is to take the middle. I prefer the aisle, Sharon prefers the window seat). I guess that’s how traveling together proves we’re made to be with one another. We’d never think about having a person to sit between us while we pretend not to know each other for the entire flight. And if a person said no and that they want to sit in the middle, I’d be really uncomfortable about sitting next to them for several hours.
- Back to earning points, I totally overlooked this current AMEX offer that lets cardholders earn 3 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on everyday purchases for all of 2021. This brings the cards back to the SPG days (not taking the Bonvoyed devaluations into account.) Still, for those who continue to carry the Bonvoy AMEX (like me), it’s worth considering breaking the card back out for non-bonused spending.
- I’ll admit that I’ve fallen into a rut with new card applications. Over 2020, I signed up for as many cashback cards as I’ll ever need. While it’s time for me to look for a card with a big sign-up bonus, I’ve honestly been considering getting the Buc-ee’s or Starbucks Rewards cards. Luckily, American Express has put out a great offer for the (Rose) Gold card and I’m seriously considering it.
