I received an email from Southwest Airlines I’ve never seen before. They sent me a discount code that’s good for 20% off any flight booked with Southwest Rapid Rewards points.
This is a targeted offer with a unique code sent to my email associated with my Rapid Rewards account. The sale does have some serious restrictions:
- Travel must be 14 days from booking.
- The promo code is good until 9/30/22.
I can’t help but wonder if such a sale, which is only good for last-minute flights, has anything to do with the reported weakness with current travel bookings. Not to mention that this sale comes right after Southwest’s flash sale for 25% off on flights to beach destinations for this winter.
If you received an email and have any last-minute travel for September or the first 2 weeks of October, make sure to check the fares with Southwest. But what if you already have an award flight booked for September, as I do?
Southwest says in the fine print that:
Offer is not redeemable for cash, and may not be used in conjunction with other special offers, or toward the purchase of a gift card or previously-booked flight, or change to a previously-booked flight.
This means you’re not able to go onto Southwest’s website and rebook your flight with the discount code and save 20%.
However, since Southwest doesn’t charge cancellation fees, you can cancel your award reservation and have the points deposited back in your account. Then you can book the same flight with the discount code (as long as you’re within 14 days of the trip.) Of course, you’d need to make sure that the fare for your flight hasn’t gone up over 20% since you booked it.
