Delta Changes Boarding Process

by SharonKurheg

Effective April 10th, Delta Air Lines has changed its boarding process in an attempt to increase safety for its passengers in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As posted on their website, the boarding process has been adjusted to encourage social distancing due to coronavirus.

All flights will be loaded from back-to-front, and just a few passengers at a time, to decrease having to pass by each other while getting to their seats. Passengers are also requested to stay in their seats in the airport terminal until their row is announced (no more gate lice!).

There are some exceptions to the above, as posted on Delta’s website:

  • Pre-boarding, as always, includes those who need extra time and assistance. During the main boarding process, customers will be invited to board by rows, starting from the rear of the aircraft, forward.

  • Customers are encouraged to help with good social distancing practices by waiting for their row to be called. Those seated in Delta One or First Class, as well as Diamond Medallion Members, remain welcome to board at any point during the boarding process.

(So if you’ve paid the big bucks or have status, you’re welcome to board whenever you want and still have the same chance to potentially spread the virus to others, or have them spread it to you, the same as before the new process went into effect?)

Delta is also providing face masks for its employees and recommends passengers bring and wear their own face masks for protection.

For now, these new procedures will be in place through May 31st, although they may be adjusted or extended as needed.
