It was in June of 2018 that we decided that we would no longer fly on a United plane. There were just too many things wrong with the airline that giving them any more money as a passenger just didn’t make sense. It wasn’t too hard to avoid them as they didn’t treat Orlando as a priority except for flights to Newark and there were plenty of other options for us to get to the NY/NJ metro area.
I did have some United MileagePlus points from when we still had the co-brand credit card. There were plenty of ways that I could use them and I found a great redemption to get us home from what was to be our trip to Japan this fall. Well, not all of the way home, but I was able to find us flights on ANA from ITM-HND-SEA in business class for 80,000 miles. I’d still have to get home from Seattle but there was no availability on United and I wouldn’t want to fly with them anyway.
If you haven’t been following the unraveling of our Japan trip, this was the last award reservation I needed to cancel. The flights were a little more than two months away and there’s no way we’re taking the trip so it was time to cancel.
I logged into Sharon’s United MileagePlus account. It was easy to find the flight as it’s the only one we had at the moment.
When clicking on the Manage trip link, the new United travel waiver showed up.
This change didn’t affect me as I was able to cancel this itinerary with no fee under United’s old policy. Just one click took me to the summary screen.
I’d get back the 160,000 miles and the $99.50 in taxes I paid for the ticket.
Just one more click and our flights were gone.
Immediately, the points redeposited in Sharon’s account. I’m bummed that I transferred 118,000 Ultimate Rewards into her United account to book these flights.
No big worries about using the United miles as the program has no expiration date on points anymore. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find award flights to Japan for 2021 or whenever we’re able to go back and revisit this trip.
