Although it’s a beautiful thing that travelers from the U.S. mainland are now able to visit Hawaii without a quarantine (and HELLO, how amazing is it that the Big Island recently made it even easier to visit?), Hawaii is still expensive. In fact, Honolulu alone is the 8th most expensive city in the U.S.!
So if you had an opportunity to get a night at a hotel in Hawaii for free (and not just any hotel – even fancy schmancy swanky hotels!), and to be a part of the greater good, wouldn’t you consider it? Welp, Hawaii offers such a thing through their Mālama program.

To Mālama is to take care of, to serve and to honor, to protect and watch over. Thus Mālama is thought of as the benevolent value of stewardship with compassion.
Mālama is a volunteer program and visitors to our 50th state are invited to participate. From the Hawaii Tourism Authority:
“In an effort to inspire mindful travel, industry partners and volunteer organizations across the state have come together with an initiative that encourages visitors to leave Hawaii better than when they arrived.
Volunteer organizations include Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, Pacific Whale Foundation, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, Ula Ae Learning Center and Waikiki Aquarium. Volunteer projects range from reforestation and tree planting to beach cleanups, ocean reef preservation, creating Hawaiian quilts for the elderly, etc.
By making a positive impact, you’ll have a more enriching travel experience and can even enjoy a free extra night from participating hotels. Some of the participating hotels include the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, The Ritz-Carlton Residences at Waikiki Beach, the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii, Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach and the Sheraton Kauai Resort, among others.
Mālama is a big thing in Hawaii. How big? Welp, Alaska Airlines is getting involved this year by planting a tree for every flight to the Hawaiian Islands.
