Thailand To Allow Vaccinated Tourists To Enter Phuket Without Quarantine

by SharonKurheg

Thailand officials have announced that tourists arriving in Phuket who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will not need to quarantine upon arrival into the country, beginning this summer.

As per The Associated Press, Thailand Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has announced that effective July 1, 2021, fully vaccinated tourists arriving on the island will not have to quarantine. The country’s council is also shortening its required quarantine period from 14 days to 10 for international tourists who don’t have proof of vaccination, starting in April.

Despite a population of roughly 70 million, Thailand has had less than 29,000 cases of COVID-19 and only 94 deaths. Domestic vaccines have not yet begun in the Southeast Asian country but the plan is to introduce them in April. The government’s goal is to inoculate at least 450,000 (70%) of Phuket’s residents by the time the island reopens for tourism in July.

The proposal for this return to tourism still has to be approved by Phuket’s governor and Thailand’s health officials who oversee the coronavirus situation. However, if approved and deemed successful, the plan could be applied to other Thai destinations, such as Samui Island, Krabi, Pattaya and Chiang Mai, beginning in October.

Before the pandemic, Phuket was the country’s second-most popular destination (Bangkok was #1). In 2019, the island welcomed about 10 million foreign tourists and generated 470 billion baht ($15 billion) in revenue. Thailand has announced a much more modest goal of welcoming around 100,000 tourists in the third quarter of 2021.

What about people flying into Bangkok? Is this only for Phuket?
