Know what happens when an airport has its grand opening 10 years later than anticipated? AND 7.5 months into a worldwide pandemic that we now know would last 2 years and counting?
Not a whole lot.
Heck, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) didn’t even get a grand opening party when it finally opened its doors on October 31, 2020. It reportedly wasn’t so much because of COVID as much as the fact that it took a decade to finally open, and that’s not very “German.” Oh, and I mean “German” as an adjective, not a nationality. At the time Berlin Brandenburg finally opened, Engelbert Luetke-Daldrup, the head of the airport himself even said, “We German engineers are ashamed.” He also suggested that the decade of delays made Berlin and Germany a “laughingstock.” So…yeah. “German.” Adjective. See ‘punctual’ and ‘orderly.’ Maybe Urban Dictionary can add it in its next update. 😉
Anyway, back to Berlin Brandenburg.
So yeah, when you open an airport when half the world is on lockdown and hardly anyone is flying, not a whole lot DOES happen. And didn’t, for months.
Fortunately, COVID is not quite as threatening as it was in late 2020. So more and more people are flying again. So much so that Berlin Brandenburg’s Terminal 2 (T2), which was built at the same time as the airport’s Terminal 1 (T1), is finally going to open.
Ryanair will be the main user of T2; it plans to use the terminal for most of its arrivals and all of its departures. Facilities for check-in and luggage drop off and collection will also be housed in the 248,000 square foot (23,000 square meters) building, which is expected to accommodate up to 6 million passengers per year (as a comparison, T1 can handle up to 28 million).
