As part of this month’s Rent Day promotion from Bilt Rewards, they offered all members complimentary United MileagePlus® Premier® status. Everyone was eligible for Silver status and those elite Bilt Rewards members were given Gold status (It was also rumored that if you already had Silver status, you’d also be bumped to Gold).
While there were reasons why you might not want to sign up for the status challenge, Sharon and I both enrolled for the promotion. Shortly afterward, we received emails saying that we’d receive notice within the next 3 weeks letting us know if our challenge requests were approved and what status we unlocked.
I haven’t seen an email from Bilt Rewards or United MileagePlus yet, but Bilt Rewards Senior Director of Travel, Richard Kerr, posted on Twitter that everyone who applied for a status challenge should be seeing their new status in their United account.
I logged into my United MileagePlus account and he was right. I am now a Premier Silver member.
Since I already had a United reservation, I went to my flight to pick a seat assignment. A pop-up box showed up letting me know that because of my Silver status, I was eligible to pick preferred seating for myself and up to 8 companions. I am also eligible for Economy Plus seats, if available, at check-in.
Besides preferred seating, I’m also eligible for the following perks:
- Group 2 priority boarding
- 1 free checked bag in economy
- Complimentary upgrades on the day of departure
- Access to preferred seating at booking and Economy Plus at check-in (includes 1 travel companion)
- 7x extra miles per dollar on United, United Express, and select partner airlines
- Avis Preferred Plus status
- Access to a greater inventory of United mileage awards
I’m going to take advantage of the better seats, free checked bags and possibly the greater inventory availability.
In my experience with other airlines, they will not take away your seating assignments even if you lose your status. So if you have any United flights planned, book them now and lock in those preferred seats. You just won’t have access to Economy Plus at check-in.
So while United Silver status doesn’t give you much, you can’t complain about the price.
