NYC Area JFK & EWR Airports Both Announce New Terminals

by SharonKurheg

It feels as if the construction at the 3 major NYC-area airports has been going on for forever. And that could be because it really has been years and years.

However, there’s some light at the end of the tunnel for both John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark-Liberty International Airport (EWR), as both have recently announced news about their respective new terminals.

Newark-Liberty Int’l Airport

Officials estimate the new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport will begin service on Dec. 8.

“We here are today to bury the old Terminal A, not praise it,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during a November 15th ribbon cutting for the new Terminal A at EWR. “We will save our praise for this new modern, bright, comfortable, expressive, frankly extraordinary Terminal A.”

The $2.7 billion terminal replaces the (very outdated, dark, dingy and teeny tiny) existing Terminal A, which opened in 1973. The new terminal features roughly 1 million square feet of space with a capacity for 33 gates, local artwork, 60 dining and retail options — many of which are familiar New Jersey brands, state-of-the-art passenger services, and a “Jersey” feel throughout.

Construction on the new Terminal A began in September 2021. When complete, it’s expected to handle more than 13 million passengers per year.

When the new Terminal A opens, 21 of its 33 gates will initially be operational, and the other 12 will come online in the next nine months. United Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada and American Airlines will begin operating there immediately; Delta will join them sometime in 2023.

John F. Kennedy International Airport

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Hudson River, JFK officials announced this week they’ll be introducing a new terminal, called Terminal 6, in 2026.

If the moniker “Terminal 6” sounds familiar, it should – the original Terminal 6 at JFK was demolished in 2011 (told ya that construction has been going on for what feels like forever). The new Terminal 6 is a $4.2 billion renovation that officials say will make Terminal 6, “the most beautiful terminal in the world.”

Plans for JFK’s new Terminal 6 include check-in counters, lounges, shopping, and dining areas. It will have easy access to Terminal 5 and will serve as a hub for international flights.

Terminal 6 will be used for flights by JetBlue Airways, however, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines are also expected to have control of some gates at the new Terminal.
