Southwest Airlines has brought back its promotional Companion Pass offer for 2026. At this point, it has become something of a late-summer tradition, even though the Companion Pass itself is meant for travel the following winter.
Southwest has offered some version of this promotion every year since 2021. The exact deadlines and qualifying bookings have changed, but the basic setup has remained the same: complete one round trip or two one-way flights in late summer or fall, then receive a limited Companion Pass for travel early the following year.
Southwest’s 2026 Promotional Companion Pass Offer
Here’s how the 2026 offer works:
- Register for the promotion before booking.
- Book one qualifying round trip or two qualifying one-way flights between August 3 and August 6, 2026.
- Complete the qualifying travel between August 3 and November 18, 2026.
- Earn a promotional Companion Pass valid from January 5 through March 3, 2027.
During that final window, your designated companion can fly with you without paying the airfare. You’ll still be responsible for applicable taxes and fees, which begin at $5.60 each way.
The most important detail is that you need to register before booking and before beginning the qualifying travel. Existing reservations don’t qualify, even if the flights fall within the promotion’s travel period.
Your Rapid Rewards number also needs to be attached to the reservation.
Points, Cash + Points And Basic Fares Qualify
The 2026 version is especially flexible when it comes to how you book.
Southwest says that all four of its current fare types qualify:
- Basic
- Choice
- Choice Preferred
- Choice Extra
Redemption reservations booked entirely with Rapid Rewards points also qualify, as do Cash + Points reservations.
That means you don’t necessarily need to purchase the qualifying flights entirely with cash. This is useful for travelers who already have a balance of Rapid Rewards points but still want to take advantage of the promotion.
Companion Pass reservations, charter flights, group travel and Getaways by Southwest bookings do not qualify.
Be Careful About Changing Your Reservation
Southwest allows changes during the booking period as long as the qualifying travel is still completed by November 18.
However, the terms warn that changes made after the promotion ends on August 6 may eliminate your eligibility.
That could become important if your travel plans shift. Even a routine schedule or itinerary change after the booking deadline could potentially affect whether Southwest considers the flight eligible.
If you book specifically for this promotion, it would be wise to avoid changing the reservation unless necessary.
What Is a Promotional Companion Pass?
The regular Southwest Companion Pass is one of the most valuable benefits in domestic travel. It allows a designated companion to fly with you whenever you travel on Southwest, whether you booked your ticket with cash or Rapid Rewards points.
Normally, earning it requires a significant amount of Southwest flying, credit card spending or a combination of the two.
This promotion offers a much easier path, but there is an obvious tradeoff: the Companion Pass is only valid for about two months rather than for the remainder of the year in which it is earned and the entire following calendar year.
That’s why we tend to call it a “mini” Companion Pass, although that isn’t Southwest’s official name for it.
Using The Promotional Companion Pass
Once earned, the promotional Companion Pass is valid for flights completed between January 5 and March 3, 2027.
You can designate one person to fly with you during that period. Your companion pays only the applicable taxes and fees, starting at $5.60 each way.
Southwest also allows you to change your designated companion up to three times while you hold the promotional pass.
There is one complication for anyone who later earns a regular Companion Pass in 2027. Changes made during the promotional period count against the number of companion changes allowed for the rest of the calendar year.
Who Can Get Value From This Offer?
The promotion works best when both parts of the schedule fit travel you were already considering.
First, you need to book and complete the qualifying Southwest flights by November 18. Then you need to have at least one trip between January 5 and March 3, 2027, during which you can bring a companion.
That second window includes plenty of potential winter getaways, but it ends before most spring break travel begins. It also doesn’t help much if you expect to travel alone or don’t know anyone who can match your schedule.
I wouldn’t book unnecessary flights solely to earn a promotional Companion Pass without first calculating what it will realistically save. However, if you already need one Southwest round trip this fall and can plan a trip with someone early next year, this can be an excellent deal.
Final Thought
Southwest has changed significantly since the first version of this promotion appeared in 2021. The airline has adjusted its fares, seating policies, partnerships and the overall passenger experience.
Yet this late-summer Companion Pass offer keeps coming back.
The 2026 version is also quite flexible. All current Southwest fares qualify, including Basic, and travelers can book with cash, points, or Cash + Points.
It gives Southwest a quick burst of bookings for late summer and fall while encouraging travelers to return during the quieter weeks after the holidays. For customers whose plans line up with both travel windows, it can also provide substantial savings.
The booking period is extremely short, so the most important step is to register before making any reservation. After that, make sure you can complete the required flights by November 18 and actually use the Companion Pass between January 5 and March 3.
