Toddler Injured While Riding On ATL Conveyor Belt

by SharonKurheg

A two-year-old boy climbed onto a moving conveyor belt at ALT earlier this week, which resulted in him falling through a luggage chute in one of the airport’s baggage rooms.

According to the boy’s mother, Edith Vega, she put her son down as she was printing her boarding pass on Monday. As toddler are sometimes wont to do, 2-year-old Lorenzo took the opportunity to scurry away and climb onto a “baggage drop” conveyor belt behind a closed and unstaffed Spirit Airlines ticket counter.

As she looked up moments later, Vegs was reported as seeing her son being ferried away on the conveyor belt.

Video shows the toddler climbing onto the conveyor belt, trying to climb over luggage in a baggage room to “save” himself, and staff rescuing him.

The belt was not moving when the child accessed it, but it is pressure-activated, so when he placed his hand on top, it began to move and carried him away, a spokesperson for the Atlanta airport told ABC News.

Lorenzo’s behind-the-scenes journey was said to have taken many twists and turns and ended about five minutes later in the TSA baggage room.

A report from the Atlanta Police Department says that a TSA worker alerted authorities after “saving” him.

The child was said to have a swollen hand after his ordeal and was transported to a local hospital for observation and treatment. He was said to have been diagnosed with a broken right hand.

Spirit Airlines says they’re working with airport officials and the TSA to make sure proper protocol was followed.
