There’s An Increased Bonus For The Relaunched Delta SkyMiles Gold AMEX Card

by joeheg

On January 30, 2020, the line of Delta SkyMiles co-brand credit cards issued by American Express got a refresh. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Card lost some of the benefits for those who used it to earn status while adding bonus earning categories to make it more appealing for everyday spending.

I think this really makes sense as the Gold Delta AMEX card was never marketed to the big spenders but to those who were looking for a card to get them free checked bags and priority boarding. To read our breakdown of the card, check out our review here.

With the relaunch of the card, American Express is offering an increased signup bonus for a limited time. If you decide that you want to sign up for this card, or any of the Delta American Express credit cards, we’d appreciate it if you use our link. We receive Delta SkyMiles for each referral and that helps us keep Your Mileage May Vary HQ going strong.

Until April 1, 2020, you can earn 60,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 in purchases on your new card in your first 3 months of card membership. You will also receive a 10,000-mile bonus after your first anniversary. A 60,000 bonus is the highest that I can recently remember for this card.

Adding a benefit of 10,000 miles on your first cardholder anniversary gives an excellent reason to keep the card for the second year and pay the annual fee.

I’d suggest keeping any card you get from American Express for at least 2 years (or more if you think the benefits outweigh the annual fee). There’s too much risk with American Express increasingly cracking down on those who they feel are abusing the system by canceling a card shortly after the signup bonus is awarded.

60,000 points is a great sign up bonus for a card with no annual fee the first year, To keep the card past the first year, it’s not much of a hardship to pay $99 and receive the extra  10,000 miles. You can redeem Delta points for 1 cent each, so those points are worth at least $100. If you’re even an occasional Delta flyer, those perks plus the ongoing benefits of the card make it a great choice.

Booked a Delta flight this am and the advertised sign up bonus was a $250 credit statement after one Delta purchase plus 40,000 Delta points after $2k spend. We went for it, not being sure if we’d renew or not for a 2nd year.
