Amazon Prime Day is when everyone starts hunting for the best deals. But before you click “Buy Now,” there’s another place worth checking: your credit card offers.
There are plenty of sites tracking the best Prime Day discounts, Lightning Deals and price drops. That’s not what this is. Instead, this is a reminder that some of the easiest extra value may come from the card you use at checkout.
This year, I found several targeted offers that could make Amazon purchases more rewarding, including bonus points from American Express and Bilt, plus a Citi financing offer for eligible purchases.
American Express: 500 Membership Rewards Points With $50 At Amazon
One of the offers I found on my Amex Platinum Card was for Amazon.com: spend $50 or more and earn 500 Membership Rewards points, up to 3 times.
That means the offer can be worth up to 1,500 bonus Membership Rewards points after $150 in eligible Amazon purchases. That’s not life-changing, but it’s a nice return if you were already planning to buy something during Prime Day.
As always with Amex Offers, you need to add the offer to your card before making the purchase. I only had this offer on my personal Platinum Card and on my wife’s authorized user card, which means we should be able to double-dip this one if the terms allow.
Bilt: 5X Points At Amazon, Target And Walmart
Bilt had another interesting targeted offer: 5X total points on qualifying purchases at Amazon.com, Target.com and Walmart.com, up to 1,000 bonus points.
That’s especially useful because it isn’t limited to Amazon. If you’re comparing prices during Prime Day, Target and Walmart often run competing sales at the same time. This type of offer gives you a reason to check all three stores before deciding where to buy.
The cap is small, but for everyday purchases or a few Prime Day items, it’s an easy value.
Citi: 0% APR With Citi Flex Pay
Citi’s offer is a little different. Instead of bonus points, Citi is promoting 0% APR for a 3-month payment plan when using Citi Flex Pay at checkout on eligible Amazon purchases of $50 or more.
That could be useful for a larger purchase you already planned to make. But it’s not an excuse to buy something just because Amazon and Citi make the monthly payment look smaller.
Also, this isn’t a points-earning bonus. It’s a financing offer, so it’s different from the Amex and Bilt deals.
Don’t Forget The Basics
Before checking out, it’s worth taking a minute to look through your card-linked offers. Amex Offers, Chase Offers, Citi Merchant Offers, Bilt offers and other targeted promotions can all change what card makes the most sense.
And don’t assume Amazon has the best price just because it’s Prime Day. If Target or Walmart is matching the deal, an offer like the Bilt 5X promotion could make one of those stores the better choice.
Final Thought
Prime Day deal coverage usually focuses on the products. That’s useful, but it’s only part of the equation.
Before buying anything, check your credit card offers, shopping portals and competing prices. A discounted item is nice. A discounted item that also earns bonus points is better.
