Happy Monday to all of our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- We’ve already written about the one U.S. airline you can’t buy a ticket for. Turns out there’s another airline in the world that you can fly with that’s been in business for decades, but until now it wasn’t easy to buy a ticket. The unmarked planes fly a single route and now there’s finally a website, but no one will admit to running it.
- I thought that banks would be more willing to pay out retention offers to keep customers. We’ve seen mixed messages so far with some banks cracking down while others upping their offerings. On Monkey Miles, there’s a new twist where your offer from the bank might change after your annual fee hits your account and you’re more likely to cancel your account to save the money.
- Our trip to Japan this fall is questionable at this point, so much so that we’re formulating a Plan B. One of the things we were going to try and do during the trip was to stay at a capsule hotel. First Cabin, one of the nicer pod hotel chains in Japan, has filed for bankruptcy. Drats!
- In one of the least surprising marketing moves ever, Disney is now selling character facemasks. Why I say that this isn’t surprising is that we’ve seen them for sale at Tokyo Disneyland, and I’d assume at Hong Kong and Shanghai, for years. I don’t know if it will be the same in the U.S. but there’s nothing quite like seeing a Japanese man walking around the parks while wearing a Marie mask. Kawaii!!
- Hotels are going out of their way to send emails to everyone they can to let us all know how clean the rooms will be when we are traveling again. Part of Marriott’s plan was to eliminate room keys, allowing us to open the room with our phones. Well, it turns out that’s only available at around 1/2 of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio and Marriott has put off the conversion project for hotels that don’t already offer keyless entry. #Bonvoyed.
- The subway system is one of the best ways to travel when visiting New York. For a long time, the service has run 24 hours a day, albeit with reduced service during the overnight hours. Due to COVID-19, the subways are going to stop for several hours each night to allow for cleaning.
- Gilbert from God Save The Points shares an important tidbit to remember when we’re able to buy things from the duty-free store again.
- If you’re not flying right now, you can still feel like you are by watching some of these entertaining airline safety videos that were shared on Point Me To The Plane. If you really want to pretend like you’re on a plane, start one of these videos and then put on your headphones and totally ignore it.
