Free Six Months Of Apple+ Streaming Service

by joeheg

In November, Sharon and I were deep into the Christmas season. That meant we were spending evenings watching our favorite Christmas movies and TV specials.

After getting through the yearly viewings of Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas (Joe’s favorite) and Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol (Sharon’s favorite), I got to pick next. I wanted to watch something I hadn’t seen in years, A Charlie Brown Christmas. While the story isn’t the best, the music is great and even though it’s not traditional Christmas carols, there’s no denying that “Skating” and “Christmastime Is Here” are ingrained into our collective consciousness as Christmas songs.

I wasn’t aware at the time that in October 2020, Apple bought the rights to all of the Peanuts-related media and planned to show them exclusively on the Apple+ streaming service.

It was easy enough to sign up for the service with a seven-day free trial. We watched Charlie Brown fail as a director and Linus tell us the meaning of Christmas.

It was a week later when the $4.99 charge hit my credit card.

There’s enough content on Apple+ that I didn’t feel too bad about paying for a month or two. I could watch on any of my connected devices.

I browsed the available content but nothing really caught my attention to the point where I was going to research how to cancel my subscription. That’s when I received this email from Apple.

From February until June 2021, Apple is giving a $4.99 monthly credit each month you keep your Apple TV+ subscription. I still need to see if that includes the 51 cents in taxes I pay per month but if that’s all I need to pay for five months, I’ll get to see if I want to keep or ditch the service. From what I’ve read, this offer seems to be universal for all subscribers, some of who have not paid for the service since its launch.

Will this lead me to keep my subscription once the free trial ends? Unknown.

With only a few big names and competition coming from all sides, it’s going to be a tough climb for Apple to become a major player in the streaming marketplace. HBO MAX has all of the WB theatrical releases for 2021 and Netflix, Disney and Amazon have way more original content coming online than Apple TV+.

I’ll give Apple five more months to prove its service is worth $5.50 per month.
