AMEX Drops My Favorite Gold Card Dining Partner

by joeheg

Of all the credit card issuers, the statement credits offered by American Express are the most difficult to use. While I view many credits like cash, or more like buying a gift card since you’re paying cash upfront that you’ll spend later, I know it will take more work to get value from AMEX credits.

I’m already thinking of ways to use the credits with my AMEX Platinum card which I only have because I took advantage of a lucrative upgrade offer from the AMEX Gold card.

One exclusive benefit to the AMEX Gold Card is the $10 monthly dining benefit. While I was only able to use the benefit once at a physical location (during our NYC visit to Shake Shack), I could use it most of the time by ordering from Grubhub.

However, I did take advantage of the “hidden” dining partner, BOXED, more than once. I was able to order things I would buy anyway and get a $10 rebate on my purchase.

That opportunity is going away, as AMEX just announced changes to the Gold Card dining benefit. Here’s the list of the updated partners.

Participating partners are Grubhub (including Seamless), Boxed (through 8/1/2022), The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, Ruth’s Chris Steak House (through 8/1/2022), and select Shake Shack locations. Excludes Shake Shack locations in ballparks, stadiums, airports, rest areas, museums, and racetracks

They added Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Milk Bar and are removing Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Boxed on 8/1/2022. I’m guessing the delay in removing the two partners is to allow any open orders to post to cardholders’ accounts.

While it’s nice to have two additional mail-order companies on the list, they aren’t known for discounted prices. Sure, I can order a three-course dinner from Commander’s Palace from Goldbelly for $180 and get $10 back, but I’m not going to do that.

If you have a list of things you were going to order from Boxed, you still have two months to use the $10 AMEX dining credit for your purchase.

If you’re lucky, you might be able to stack the statement credit with the current Boxed $10 AMEX Offer.

Living away from larger cities, Boxed was really the only one I would occasionally use. Not so much bummed they’re dropping it, but more bummed they added several options that I still won’t be using.
I really love my gold card, but these offers are nothing to brag about from my perspective.
