Budget Airlines’ Latest IFE: Singing Flight Attendants

by SharonKurheg

Low cost carriers (LCCs), and especially ultra low cost carriers (ULCCs), don’t offer a whole lot of amenities. So if you want anything on your flight – say, something to eat or drink – you’re going to have to pay for it. “You get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get” was never so true.

LCCs and ULCCs generally don’t offer any in-flight entertainment. Seats that have screens to watch movies or TV shows cost more for them to buy, so they’re oftentimes not an option. Many of those low budget airlines don’t even offer Wi-Fi, never mind any sort of streaming entertainment.

So what’s a bored passenger to do?

Of course, if you have your own device, you can read, play, or watch whatever you’ve previously downloaded. Others bring books, magazines or puzzles.

But some enterprising flight attendants on a handful of flights are taking things into their own hands and are offering their own in-flight entertainment.

They’re singing for passengers.

A passenger on an Air Asia flight from Cambodia to Vietnam recently uploaded footage of one of her flight attendants, who decided to serenade his passengers with an Ed Sheeran song over the plane’s microphone system.

“There was no in-flight entertainment on our flight from Cambodia to Vietnam, so our flight attendant said he’d perform for us,” _ashwebster captioned on her TikTok video. “I’ve never been so confused and happy all at once.”

Another TikToker, oliver.lds, posted when his Avelo flight attendant sang a parody of “Over the Rainbow” as they approached their nighttime landing.

“When the flight attendant sings on the speaker while landing at night,” was the caption. The FA got a round of applause when he was done.

But wait, there’s more!

Jhorwel Ramos, a flight attendant from Sky Cana, a Dominican charter and passenger airline, uploaded a video of himself singing a song for his passengers before take off. He read the lyrics to the song off his phone, but he actually had a pretty decent voice 😉

All of this “entertainment” reminds me of the concerts in the sky Southwest Airlines has done, on and off, both before and after Covid. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – as entertaining as some might find these interludes, I think it’s intrusive. And when it’s a flight attendant singing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at 6 o’clock in the morning? Yeah…just kill me now.

Obviously, I’m not a fan of this type of entertainment. How do you feel about flight attendants breaking out into song?
