Happy Wednesday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Stefan Krasowski is one of our fellow travel bloggers on BoardingArea; his blog, Rapid Travel Chai, is a favorite. So we were thrilled for him when he was featured on NPR not long ago! It turned out he had just fulfilled his dream to visit every country before he turned 40. Normally, that wouldn’t be such a big deal. I mean, we’ve written about the woman who traveled to every country in the shortest amount of time possible. And we also covered the 21-year-old who became the youngest person to visit every country. But Stefan’s claim to fame? He used a bunch of points and miles. 😉
- I loved this article that highlights using Facebook groups to help you plan your travel. I only wish they had included our group 😉 Travel: Disney, the US, Points, Miles, Savings & Everything Everywhere Else is our little corner of Facebook – we’re over 8700 members strong (we have members from all over the world) and posts include newer and older/ICYMI articles from YMMV and other sources, funny memes, a safe place to ask questions, post photos, etc. Come check it out!
- Chris from Point Me To The Plane wrote about a new bus startup that wants to offer their services for shorter distances by teaming up with smaller, regional airlines. It immediately reminded me of the “moving hotel” (read: it’s a bus) that allows you to fall asleep in one city and wake up in another.
- We had written about a very cool Harry Potter-themed festival held annually in Staunton, VA, and wondered about the name change that had suddenly happened. It turned out they were told by Warner Brothers what they could and couldn’t do in terms of “Harry Potterness” due to copyright. The name change hasn’t hurt them in the least – all accounts point to the Queen City Mischief & Magic 2019 event being a smashing success and they’ve already announced their dates for 2020.
- Gary at View From The Wing wrote about the class-action lawsuit that was recently filed against Marriott due to its resort fees. We’ve written about resort fees a few times over the years:
— Why hotels charge a resort fee and ways to get out of paying it
— The place where resort fees have been banned
— The time when we set straight the idiot Marriott CEO who likened resort fees to checked baggage fees
Hopefully, more and more lawsuits will happen and we can be gone with resort fees, once and for all! - You always feel some sort of vindication when one of the “big boys” feels the same way you do. Back in June, Joe wrote how loyalty programs don’t actually reward loyalty anymore. So what was recently written in the Washington Post? “Unhappy with your travel loyalty program? Join the crowd.” EXACTLY!
- HEY NEWBIES! A while back, Joe wrote a post for newbies about how to get started earning points and miles balances. Lest you think those suggestions are only for when you’re starting out….they’re not. Gilbert at God Save The Points practically backed that up with his post from this week, about his miles goals and the credit cards he’s applying for to get there – which coincides directly with Step 1 of Joe’s post.
