Happy Wednesday to all of our travel friends, both near and far! Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, as well, so we’re passing them along.
- Universal Orlando Resort’s Islands Of Adventure theme park and CityWalk shopping, dining, nightclub, movie theater and mini golf district celebrated their 20th anniversary on May 28, 2019. Michael from Inside The Magic gave a terrific look at the history of both areas and how they’ve developed over the past 20 years.
- Mark from Miles to Memories recently took a canal tour in Amsterdam and it sounds as if he had a great time, between the history, hidden gems, cruising and…street toilets? I thought that Japan had cornered the market on weird public toilets, but perhaps I was wrong?
- There have now been four airports that’ve had pushback by their respective local governments for wanting to have a franchise of Chick-fil-A, the chain that regularly gives some of its profits to anti-LGBTQ+ groups (Buffalo, San Antonio, San Jose – its government officials plan to make THEIR airport CFA “the gayest CFA,” and Miami (which was challenged by a Commissioner that isn’t even the same district as MIA). So what’s the next in CFAgate? The FAA is investigating San Antonio International and Buffalo Niagara International Airports for religious discrimination complaints.
- It’s not often that the Queen of England visits an airline that’s regularly used for common citizens, but Matthew from Live And Let’s Fly reports she did just that a few days ago. Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to British Airways to commemorate the carrier’s 100th birthday. Cheers!
- If you went to Walt Disney World sometime between 1989 and 2008, you may have gone to Pleasure Island, which was the resort’s dance and comedy club district. One of the clubs on PI was called The Adventurers Club; it was an interactive comedy club like no other. It had lots and LOTS of fans who mourned its loss when WDW closed the island and even now, over 10 years after its last “Kungaloosh!,” people still talk about it and wish Disney would re-build it somewhere. Theme Park University recently got to speak with the President of Techniflex, which is the company that produced most of the special effects at the AdvClub. For fans of the Club, it’s a fascinating read.
- It feels like so many “travel blogger” posts are intended for people who already have a good handle on the whole points/miles thing. I know I don’t (if you look at the stuff I post, you’ll see I’ll rarely about those topics unless it’s the bare basics). And Joe and I know many of our readers don’t. That’s why we have a whole category on YMMV that’s dedicated to newbies – it’s the topics that go over the basic info, for those who are just starting out in the points/miles/airlines/hotels world. Anyway, InsideFlyer recent posted Hilton Honors: A Beginner’s Guide To Earnings, and newbies, it’s definitely for you! (and me!) 😉
- And finally, I just think this is cool and the epitome of why we need the internet in our lives. It’s 10 glorious hours of airplane white noise!

Several times, although not since they left their original location on 57th. When it first opened, we still lived in the northeast and went once or twice per year. They did a good job with using a lot of the ideas that were used in the AdvClub, but although there was an interactive component, it was fleeting because of the nature of the venue. Over the years the food got nastier, and then we moved to FL and had the “real” AdvClub almost in our backyard, so we never went to J&H Club again.
That about sums it up. They are now on lower 7th Avenue and the food is bleh and the iteractivity is cool, but hit and miss depening on the performers – it feels as if some new owner has taken over and is just milking it for the most $$out with the least $$ in
