Marriott Plans To Tighten Cancellation Policy In July

by SharonKurheg

Marriott’s cancellation policy for upcoming hotel stays has evolved since the advent of COVID-19.

On March 17, their cancellation policy was:

For all Marriott International hotels world-wide, we are implementing the following policies:

  • For guests with existing reservations for any future arrival date, including reservations with pre-paid rates that are typically more restrictive, we will allow full changes or cancellation without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival,* as long as the change or cancellation is made by April 30, 2020. Please note that any changes to existing reservations will be subject to availability and any rate differences.
  • For guests making new reservations for any future arrival date, including reservations with pre-paid rates, between today and April 30, 2020, we will allow the reservation to be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival date.* Please note that changes to the reservation will be subject to availability and any rate differences.

That policy stayed roughly the same, albeit with some minor tweaks here and there, except the date would change:

  • On March 30, you could make changes through June 30th.
  • On June 3, you could make changes through July 5th

There admittedly may have been other of these types of changes that I missed, but you get the gist.

Now it looks as if they’re going to tighten the reins.

According to an industry news publication, Marriott plans to update its cancellation policy, which only applies through July 5, on July 6. This newest policy will advise that guests will be able to cancel new bookings for stays between July 6 and Sept. 30, 2020, up to 24 hours before the day of arrival without incurring a penalty.

Also, guests with pre-paid reservations had been allowed to cancel without penalty in the last few months. That’s apparently changing too, and those guests will now have to follow individual hotel policy rate rules.

Existing restrictions, such as those for group bookings, will continue to apply.

Any news on what the airlines are doing with their policies e.g., Delta’s flexible cancellation policy only currently applies for bookings up thru June 30?
